Your initial appointment will last up to 1 hour and includes a detailed case history, examination, diagnosis and treatment:
Case History: First of all osteopath Shanilla Diaz will ask you detailed questions about your symptoms and the issues they are causing. You will also be asked about your medical history, including any medication you may be taking, as well as your general health and lifestyle to help generate a "holistic" picture that includes not only your symptoms but also the circumstances under which they have arisen.
Examination: It may be necessary to perform a standing examination to enable full assessment of the area and the extent of the injury. Simple tests may be carried out to focus on the correct diagnosis. These will include a series of gentle movements and, if necessary, reflex tests or blood pressure checks. It may be necessary for you to take off items of clothing for examination and treatment, so please wear underwear you will feel comfortable in. Gowns are available for your use and your privacy will of course be respected at all times.
Diagnosis: Your diagnosis and plan of treatment will be discussed with you fully and agreed before treatment commences. You will also be given an approximate guide as to the number of treatments you may need. If X-rays or other further detailed examination is necessary, the reasons will be explained and you will be referred to an appropriate professional. Any risks associated with treatment will always be discussed with you and advice will be given to you about the best and safest approach for your condition.
Treatment: The aim of the osteopathy treatment is to relieve your pain and other symptoms. This will include treating your specific complaint as well as addressing any underlying causes. The treatment is a manual therapy using various techniques to ease the pain, tension and stiffness in the soft tissues and joints of the body. Ultrasound therapy and taping and strapping are also available when appropriate.
Patients may experience a little discomfort after treatment for up to 48 hours. By following simple aftercare advice given to you by your osteopath you should be able to ease any irritation felt. Aftercare includes techniques such as hot and cold therapy as well as exercise plans. Lifestyle advice along with postural and exercise techniques (including everything from office ergonomics to baby routines) will be given at the end of your treatment. This may prove invaluable in managing your complaints. A variety of osteopathic techniques are available (structural, visceral, fascial & cranial).
Further appointments: last 30 minutes and revolve mainly around treatment.
