This covers people who have been in pain longer than six weeks, but less than one year, where the pain may be linked to structures in the back such as joints, muscles and ligaments.

The neck is one of the most complex parts of the body and there are numerous different tissues that could be the cause of neck pain including; soft tissue injury e.g. muscles, chronic wear and tear over a prolonged period of time, infections and tumours – although these are very rare. Other causes include sports injuries and whiplash, rheumatoid arthritis and cervical disk degeneration,. Some patients may be experiencing pain in other areas of their body such as their upper back, arms or shoulders, which could be sourced to the neck.
It is therefore important that people suffering with neck pain visit a qualified osteopath who specialises in the examination and treatment of neck pain.
Fulham Osteopathic Care provides treatment for neck pain whatever its origin. Whether you are experiencing pain as a result of whiplash from a car accident, or a sports injury, Shanilla Isabel Diaz can create an effective treatment programme and provide long term relief.
Your Fulham osteopath Isabel Diaz will always identify the cause of the problem before suggesting a suitable treatment. When you go into labour, there is an ideal position for your baby to be in to encourage a straightforward a birth as possible. This is known as ‘optimal fetal positioning’. Isabel Diaz is an experienced London osteopath with a special interest in pregnancy & midwifery.
The following information is for you and your partner to try and encourage the ideal position before you go into labour. If you are expecting only one baby (not suitable for multiple pregnancies) and the baby is coming head first, then from 34 weeks the following advise will encourage your baby to lie with it’s back to your left side/front.
Here’s the do’s.
THE EFFECTIVENESS OF BRAXTON HICKS MAY BE ENCOURAGED USING THE LEANING FORWARD POSTURES, HELPING THE BABY MOVE INTO THE OPTIMUM POSITION.
Here’s the do not’s.
SOME USEFUL POSITIONS FOR LABOUR
Remain active as much as possible standing leaning forward and rocking your hips side to side, very effective during a contraction.
For comfort lean forward over a bean bag in between contractions.
Use your partner to find a comfortable position hang from his neck allowing your body to sag, let your knees turn outwards.
With your partner sitting on a chair, squat in between his legs and rest your arms on his thighs.
Use all fours position.
Place your hand on your tummy below your navel (belly button) and cough slightly to recruit your core abdominal muscles. You will feel your naval draw in towards your spine, do not let your back move. Breathe normally whilst gently keeping these muscles pulled in for 5-10 seconds. Continue to breathe normally, relax again. Repeat 5 times, at least 3 times per day.
Pelvic Tilting Exercise - pelvic tilting exercise can help relieve back ache and wind and also help tone your abdominal muscles. It can be done lying on your back (knees bent), side lying, sitting down or standing. Lie on your back with your knees bent up and feet placed on the ground. Breathe out as you pull in your abdominal (tummy muscles) and tighten your buttocks. Feel your waist flatten onto the ground. Hold for a count of 5, breathing normally. Slowly relax your tummy muscles and buttocks. Repeat up to 5 times, 3 times per day. Stop if you experience any pain or discomfort.
Pelvic floor exercises are particularly important during your pregnancy and after the birth of your baby regardless of the type of delivery you have had. Initially exercising them may reduce dicomfort and swelling. In the longer term, toning up the muscles may prevent stress incontinence (leaking of urine when coughing, sneezing and laughing). It can also help safeguard against prolapse and may improve your sex life.
Imagine you are trying to stop yourself passing wind and at the same time trying to stop your flow of urine.
You do the exercise by squeezing and lifting the muscles, closing and drawing up the front and back passages. There are two types of exercises, slow and fast.
Slow Contractions
“Sqeeze and lift” – hold for as long as you can, but no longer than 10 seconds.
Release slowly and rest for at least 4 seconds between each “squeeze and lift”
Repeat 5-10 times, 3-5 times a day.
Fast Contractions
Follow the slow contactions with up to 10 quick powerful contractions. This will help your muscles react quickly when you laugh, cough, sneeze or exercise.
